With more than 50% of the global population living in cities, the urban way of life has brought indisputable advantages, as well as a number of significant challenges, particularly related to the environment. The most common source of health and environmental issues in urban areas globally is road transport, which remains the main contributor to atmospheric air pollution. An expanding middle class in emerging markets has led to higher levels of consumption of goods, amongst them a higher adoption rate of private vehicles, with the associated increase in pollutants negatively impacting air quality and health. As rapid urbanisation continues to shape economies, national governments must find ways to balance and provide infrastructure, public services and sustainable growth.

Through the Innovating for Clean Air (IfCA) programme, Connected Places Catapult and the British Embassy team in Indonesia are supporting Indonesia in its aspirations to address these challenges through the adoption of e-mobility solutions and policy interventions. As Indonesia has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with its membership in the Paris Agreement, these reduction targets and timescale make e-mobility a strategic necessity. In order to comprehensively address the requirements of the Paris Agreement, Indonesia seeks to transform its transport sector through the National Action Plan for GHG Reduction (RAN-GRK), and such an ambitious transformation in scope and scale is only possible through the collaborative efforts of coordinated policymakers and the private sector unified into an overall strategic approach.

The Catapult's IfCA programme aims to highlight the opportunity which Indonesia represents to the firms in the UK e-mobility ecosystem and provide practical guidance on how to access it. This project aims to build on the ongoing collaborations that have taken place in three cities – Bandung, Denpasar and Surabaya – to strengthen UK-Indonesia linkages and exchanges of information, technologies and know-how.
